Attempting a Saturday Run

Thursday into Friday we got a nice snow storm. I think our area got about 5" of snow total. I didn't do anything yesterday because honestly, I was still a bit traumatized by Thursday night's ride home. I couldn't even go into work because the roads were so bad I was afraid I wouldn't get home again!

But, this morning, hubby and I braved the cold (19*) at 11:00 a.m. and went out to run. We bundled ourselves up and went to our normal running spot hoping the sidewalks or the streets would be clear enough to run on. Nope. They were horrible. My fear when we decided to run was there would be a lot of ice, making running a scary proposition. I was right. There was lots of ice.

And so, we decided rather than run and hurt ourselves or just go home we would go for a walk instead. We went out and did 1.3 miles in 27 minutes. Yea, no land speed record here, but there were a few people who haven't cleaned their sidewalks at all and we were trudging through 5" of snow, or slowing down because the whole sidewalk was a sheet of ice.

So, while we didn't go far or long this morning, I'm proud we got our butts out there and did something. I'm hoping that come Monday, the sidewalks might be better and I can get in a 30 minute run. I only have about 2 weeks before Love Run training begins. I'm not in condition yet to even start, so these next two weeks are crucial to getting ready. Let's hope the weather gets a bit better because if not, training is going to be a challenge!

How did your run go today? Did you have to fight the snow and ice today or are you smart and live in warm weather, where ice and snow aren't an issue?

Odd reason for hitting the gym

I belong to the Y.M.C.A. For that reason, when other gyms are open (such as New Year's Day), my gym is closed. I knew I wouldn't be hitting the gym on NYD, but made the decision to go Jan. 2 after work. I had my bag packed on Jan. 1 and all ready to go!

Then doubt crept in because the weather forecast was calling for snow. In my neck of the woods, 3-5" of snow, starting at noon then getting worse around rush hour. I was nervous about this because I didn't want to get stuck if the roads were bad. During work, I made the decision to go straight home. I have workouts at home I can do. No reason to risk the car and me by waiting to go home when the temps would be colder and more snow on the ground.

What I failed to realize was the snow was much worse than we thought while at work. Oh, and did I mention I needed gas? My car told me I had about 38 miles before I would run out. I knew in the horrific traffic I wouldn't make it to a gas station before running out. As I was driving past the gym, the lights were on, people were in the cardio center. I could park, hit the gym, then hopefully traffic would be better and I could get to a gas station.

I parked the car, walked to the gym, and found out they never close early unless it's a really bad issue. My Y is a residence center too, so they stay open for the residents. Thank God! I changed and hit the cardio center. I did 35 minutes on the TM (1.75 miles) and the bike for 35 (6.5 miles). While on the bike, one of the instructors I used to take TRX classes came over and told me to pedal faster. We chatted a bit and he reminded me of a gas station that was 4 blocks away. Thank you Shawn! I then did my stretches, then headed to the car. I got my gas and headed home.

And it was horrible! It took me 2 hours to get from the gas station to home. It took an hour from the gas station to my exit off the highway, then another hour from the exit to home. This trip is normally about 30 minutes at the time of night I was driving. The highway hadn't been cleared and we were going about 20 miles an hour. That was fun. Compared to the second hour of my trip, it was cake. I got off the highway and made it literally to within a quarter mile of home when my car wouldn't go up the hill. So, I went around. Then I couldn't get up another hill and my car slid backwards down the hill. I tried going the way I came, then literally got my car stuck going up a third hill. I had to abandon my car at an auto body shop and decided to try walking home...in the dark, on a road covered in snow, with no shoulders or sidewalks.

That's when a kind woman who lived next to the auto body shop came out of her house asking what I was doing. When I told her, she insisted on taking me home. She had a truck that could make it up the hills and wouldn't hear of me walking. She grabbed her keys and drove me home. We grabbed hubby on the way because he was walking towards me as I walking towards home so I didn't have to walk the whole way alone. I got home around 10:00 p.m., ate dinner, went to bed by 11:00 p.m. Exhausted!

So, while I had a horrible traffic night, I did get my workout in. And I learned there are still great people in the world care who will go out of their way to help you.

Did you have to deal with snow Thursday?

First snow of the year...in October...

Yesterday we had the first snow of the season.  Yes, the first snow of the season....in October.  Craziness!  And it wasn't just a simple little flurry or a simple little coating.  It was so thick and heavy we used the snow blower.

I will admit that when I first heard we were in for snow, I blew it off.  Come on!  It's October!  People over-react so often to snow that I blew it off.  Had no faith that this really would amount to much.  Alrighty, I was wrong.  So wrong.  LOL!  It's all good.  It's pretty and believe it or not, it's already melting.  I heard Thursday it's supposed to be 60 degrees.  Yup, 60 degrees.  What a week.

Time to head down the front steps

There's a bit of snow out there

A bit of snow on the cars

Yup, a bit of snow.  Can you see how deep the snow is?

Where the heck is my driveway???

We were a tad bit nervous that the snow on the wires would cause our power to go out.  It did for about 15 seconds, but then came back on.  Phew!  Our friend who lives about 15 minutes north of us lost power yesterday and I think over 400,000 people in Central PA lost power.

All sorts of snow out there.

Thank heavens for snow blowers!

A little off kilter

So, my normal long runs usually happen on Saturday.  When I started running a few years ago, the only day of the week I ran was Saturday, then when I started adding mileage, it would be Saturday morning.  And I've just continued that.  I'm sure I'm not alone in having my long runs on Saturday mornings.  I'm sure there are lots of people (maybe even the majority) who do this.  I do know it's strange for me to do a long run on either Friday or Sunday.  I've done them occasionally on a Sunday and it just feels...weird.  And not running Saturday morning, when running on Sunday, is weird too.

But, this week I switched up my long run from Saturday to Friday.  Why?

I'm in the Harrisburg area, which is currently receiving 6"-10" of snow.  Yup.  I can attest to this.  There's a lot of snow happening out there.  It's really quite odd.  Snow in October?  Really?  I just checked and there's not average snowfall for October in the Harrisburg area.  Surprise, surprise.  LOL!

So, this is why I switched my run from Saturday to Friday.  I changed the mileage because I'm a wuss and was afraid of running on the Rail Trail on a weekday.  It's awful out in the middle of nowhere and without other runners/bikers out there with me, I really was nervous about being attacked.  Let's just say I was be cautious.  Yea, cautious.

Stay tuned.  I'll probably add some snow photos later in the day.  What's a post about an epic October snow storm without photos?

** Who knew the graphic above would change?  LOL!  When I posted this initially, it showed the Harrisburg area due for 6"-10" of snow.  I swear!**
