When can I say I lead an active life?

Have you ever filled out a quiz or survey that asks how active you are?  How many times a week you exercise?  Do you consider yourself active or sedentary?  I have.  And I never have a clue how to answer it.  I have a hard time wrapping my mind around my activity level.

You see, I was  never active growing up.  I did some exercise as a kid:

5th and 6th grade - Basketball
7th, 8th, and 9th grade - Softball
11th and 12th grade - Karate

But in between, nothing.  For years afterwards, nothing.  I didn't play sports in college.  I did join a gym after college and did a decent job of going, but I never felt like I went enough to really qualify as being active.  Then we moved from NJ to PA and there was again very little activity.

I started running in 2007 and have been running consistently ever since.  Sure, I'm not that great at keeping up with it in the summer months because I really hate running in the heat.  I'm better than I have been, but man!  It's hot out there come June, July, and August!  I also added in walking, Wii activity games, a stationary bike, and workout videos.  Then this past January hubby and I joined the YMCA and I've been going usually about 3 times a week.  So, in reality I have become pretty active.  I've trained for three half marathons for heaven's sake!

But, if I were to answer the question - are you active?  I'm not sure how I would answer it.  Technically, I should say yes.  I'm active.  But, in my head I can't quite recognize that as true.  I keep thinking back to my entire life and how inactive I've been overall.  Obviously I've changed.  I incorporate exercise into my life with much more frequency than I ever have, but I just can't get past the idea that I really am not that active.

What about you?  Was there a point where you considered yourself active or do you have problems considering yourself an active person?

  1. You've run 3 half marathons (so far) and go to the gym 3-4x a week. I think you're there! :-)
