The post where I come back

Well, hello! How are you? How've you been since January? Has your year gone well?

I had all good intentions of getting back into writing this blog at the beginning of the year. I did a few posts, then stopped. I don't know what happened, but I'll be honest, I kinda lost the password to get into the blog. And with that, I stopped posting because I didn't feel like I had anything good to post about.

But, I decided I wanted to have this back. I wanted a place where I could share what's going on and ask questions and show off my cats. Ha! You will always see pics of the cats!

So, I'm back. I'm not going to write multiple posts about what has happened between January and August, so I'm going to do a quick recap and start going forward from here:

  • We had 30" of snow in these parts back in January. Made getting to work and training for Shamrock Dolphin Challenge a bit challenging;
  • At one point, our schedule became so busy we started doing our long runs on Friday nights. It was actually fun and I loved that the runs were done so I could sleep in on Saturday mornings and sometimes get a second run in on the weekend.
  • I ran my favorite three races in March - St. Patrick's Day 5k in Baltimore and the Dolphin Challenge in Virginia Beach. I didn't set any PRs, but I had fun.
  • I missed running one of my other favorite races in April - Sole of the City 10k in Baltimore - because I killed my back the week before and I just could not imagine running a 10k. It made me sad because hubby ran it, but I knew I did the right thing.
  • In May, I decided with my Y membership running out in June, I needed a gym closer to home and one that I would have the ability to go on weekends. So, I joined the local Gold's Gym in town.
  • June changed my life dramatically {and I am not exaggerating} when I fell off a stair in my backyard and broke my right ankle. It has been a rough summer and it is not healing as fast as I hoped {and read about}.
  • I missed another race. I was signed up to run the Baltimore Women's Classic the following Sunday, but with a broken ankle, that sure didn't happen. I was not a happy camper.
  • June also saw us plan our 15th wedding anniversary trip. We go to Jamaica every 5 years and this is the year we go back. We visited the travel agent and booked our trip!
  • After the ankle break, the summer stopped. I used a scooter for almost two full months before getting the ok to start walking without it. It really messes with your mind when you always thinking about whether you can do something or not. I highly recommend not breaking anything from the waist down. Break a finger, your wrist, elbow, shoulder, ANYTHING but below the waste. It seriously impinges your ability to do anything.
  • August brought some good news - the ability to stop using the scooter, then the ability to start walking without the air cast, and my husband's 40th birthday.
  • I spent months {ask my friend who listened to me go on and on about what to do since February} planning a party for him, then I broke my ankle. I then had to re-do the whole party. It turned out well and we all had a fun time. That's what matters.
  • We also went to Atlantic City, NJ for three days to celebrate his birthday {and to try to take suspicion away from the party}. We had a great time, even with my limitations. I got to put my feet in the ocean, even though I couldn't go swimming. It was something.
So, we are all caught up. Here's what's coming up in the next few months:
  • Getting back normal movement in my ankle.
  • Working with the doctors on some health stuff that's come up because of the ankle.
  • Getting back to the gym, getting back to running {though I'm sure that will take longer than I want}
  • Work on getting my eating under control. I didn't adjust the diet with the broken ankle and gained some more weight. Need to find a way to start eating healthy and stay consistent with it.
  • Writing a journal article on the 1918 Influenza Epidemic in Philadelphia. My first attempt at being published.
  • I also have an idea for an ebook that once my journal article is done, I will be working on.
My goal is to get back to writing on the blog several times a week, probably not everyday, but sharing my life and answering questions if you have any. Thanks for checking back in and we'll chat soon!

New Year's Day 2016

Hello! Happy New Year! I hope you met your goals and made all sorts of happy memories in 2015!

I am not going to sugar coat anything. I didn't post for long stretches in 2015. Mentally, I just wasn't in it. I ran three half marathons and a 10 miler in the spring, something I had never done. After the first two half marathons I qualified for the group Half Fanatics. All of which I am proud of.

In July I left the Archives, which I loved, to take a job with the Foundation that supports the historical organization. While I did this of my own free will for very valid reasons {full-time work/better pay/more mentally stimulating} I admit to missing the Archives. The positive is I only work one building over and I go through the Archives every day, so I still see my friends. But it has been an adjustment.

I helped plan my friends wedding in August and had the honor of photographing both the wedding and reception. It was a wonderful experience and I'm so happy that after 20+ years together they finally were able to marry.

I ran a fourth half marathon as part of a marathon relay team. It was a bad day for me. I had the second half of the race and by mile 8 I was done. I felt like crap that day due to mother nature {which had never happened before} and unfortunately I finished after the timing mat was removed. They were kind enough to wait with the finish arch and still give me the finishers medal and blanket. {That blanket rocks by the way.}

But, it's now 2016 and I want to get back to writing here again. So, I'm here. Over the next week I'm going to share what I want to accomplish this year. I'm again going to focus on a word. Which word? Come back soon to find out! ;-)

Thank you for reading this. Stop back soon for more!

A test of endurance

This coming weekend I have a race....well I have two races. On Saturday I'm going to run the Baltimore Running Festival's 5k and on Sunday I'm running the Kid's Chance 10k. I ran the BRF Marathon Relay in 2010 and had a blast! I had some fun running friends with me and I ran the farthest I've ever run at 7 miles. It was what got me to run my first half marathon that following February.

Sunday I'm running the Kids Chance 10k in Harrisburg. My co-worker had been looking for a 10k to run as she had mastered the 5k {meaning she wanted a challenge} and I asked if I might run with her. I didn't want to take away her first 10k thunder. She said no, she should love for someone to run with her, so come Sunday afternoon {yes, it's a 2:00 p.m. start...thank heavens!} I'll lace up and run 6.1 miles.

This is a good thing because I need the challenge. I have a double race weekend in March that's really important to me - Shamrock 8k and Shamrock Half Marathon. My goal is to set PR's at both distances. So, getting in a double run weekend, even when I'm not running well, is good practice.

I have a feeling I'm gonna be a bit tired come Sunday afternoon. LOL!

Motivational Monday

It's amazing how many things we dream of doing, want to do, imagine doing but somehow never do. If you're like me, it's because you don't think you can. You lack the faith in your abilities to accomplish the things you want. Why? I don't know. I'm sure a psychologist could answer that question better than I.

But, I decided in August that I have goals and things I want to accomplish with my running. I'm no Usain Bolt or Meb, but I know I can be better than I am. So, I made some decisions:

1. I investigated a running coach and on Tuesday, September 2, 2014 I signed up with one. I started my training with my new coach yesterday.

2. I'm going back to personal training at the Y.M.C.A. I had fantastic results {hello 5k, 8k, and half marathon PRs}.

3. I am going to do boot camp once a week.

4. According to my running coach I will be back at TRX. I am actually happy about this because I've wanted to do it, but I always found an excuse. Since I have to report on my workouts, I need to get my butt there!

5. Since I'm working hard on my training, I'm thinking this will lead me to eat healthier. I was told earlier in the year that when you concentrate on your training, your eating habits will start to shape up so you don't lose the effects of your training.

So, I am trying. My goals right now are simple...I've been trying to reach these goals for a couple of years now.

Sub-35 minute 5k
Sub-60 minute 8k/5 mile
Sub-2:50:00 Half Marathon

My coach believes it's doable. I believe it's doable. I just need the accountability and the support to reach these goals.

What goals do you have? What are you doing to reach them?

Getting the motivation back

The last couple of days I have been thinking more and more about getting my butt out there running. On Sunday I decided to go for a 10 minute run, after my bike ride. It seems strange to go for a run after a bike ride, because it isn't easy but I wanted to. Plus I kinda like brick workouts. Weird, I know.

I hate running in the heat, so I usually skip running in July and August. I have been wanting to get my motivation back so I thought 10 minutes is better than nothing. And I was right. I felt good after running those 10 minutes. It was about 85*, but I didn't feel that hot. Probably since I biked 5 miles and was already hot. I felt slow and sluggish and my second 5 minutes were really a struggle, but I did it.

Then on Monday, I went out for another 10 minute run. I walked up to the local park and ran 10 minutes around the path. It's pretty hilly and a struggle for me honestly. I figured the hills make up for the lack of bike ride. I think I might have been right! The one hill that kills almost killed me! I had to do a "run to that bench, run to that tree, run to that playground..." But, I did it!

I know .03 of a mile isn't that much, but I'm happy. The goal is to run faster and to run through the end of the summer. Since I hate running in the heat, just having a goal of 10 minutes is manageable. I can do 10 minutes. This gets me back into the habit of running, which is what I desperately need. Why?

I have set up some goals and challenges for myself over the next year. What are they?

1. Finish my 14 in 2014 Challenge. I've only run 5 races so far. I need 9 more. Eep! I have the following on my radar:
    • Boardwalk 5k - Atlantic City, NJ {August 23, 2014}
    • Quarterback Club of York 5k - York, PA {September 1, 2014}
    • Bird-in-Hand 5k - Lancaster, PA {September 5, 2014}
    • Cupcake Classic 5k - Hanover, PA {September 13, 2014}
    • Troeg's Hop Dash 5k - Hershey, PA {October 5, 2014}
    • Baltimore Running Festival 5k - Baltimore, MD {October 18, 2014}
    • Pumpkin Chase 5k - Harrisburg, PA {October 25, 2014}
    • Kids Peace Trick-or-Trot 5k - Baltimore, MD {November 1, 2014}
    • Hero Run 5k - Harrisburg, PA {November 2, 2014}
    • Girls on the Run 5k - York, PA {December 6, 2014}
    • Celtic Solstice 5 Miler - Baltimore, MD {December 13, 2014}
2. Complete the Celtic Solstice 5 Miler in under 1 hour. I've had this as a goal for a year and a half. I would like to accomplish it on December 13, 2014.

3.  I'm also tossing around the idea of running two half marathons on back-to-back Sunday's to make it into Half Fanatics.  I'm already signed up for the Shamrock 8k and Half Marathon in Virginia Beach March 21 & 22. I kinda want to run The Love Run again next year and that is the following Sunday, March 29th. Totally doable. This Half Fanatics thing has been in my head for a year or two, but I've been too nervous about doing it. The more I think about it though, the more I want to do it.

Maybe I'm just getting my motivation back for running. Maybe? Let's hope so!

National Running Day 2014

It's National Running Day friends! I haven't been the best runner in the world, but I'm still kinda happy about today. I had planned to get up early and run, but I took boot camp last night and it killed me! I was just so tired.

So, instead, I'll come home from work and get a few miles in. I debated using the treadmill, but... I hate the treadmill! I'm ok with using it to start up the C25k program, because it will help me run at a faster pace than I usually do. To run a few miles? Outside all the way.

Are you running on National Running Day? Do you have a goal? How many miles are you going today?

So many races...

There are so many races I want to run in the next 6-7 weeks {end of June}. Problem? Sprained ankle and finances. Why???

Freedom 5k - Harrisburg
Run for Bullies 5k - York {same date as below}
Glow in the Park 5k - Harrisburg {same date as above}
Baltimore Women's Classic 5k - Baltimore
Summer Luau 5k/10k - York {same weekend as below - Sat.}
Freedom 5k - Philadelphia {same weekend as above - Sun.}

Oh and I think I want to run this one - The Philly 10k. The problem is I hate running over the summer. But, maybe my three times a week on the treadmill could be extended past the end of June?

Are you having trouble deciding which races you want to run this spring? What fun races are near you?

Running gear can be affordable

I've mentioned this before, but just so you know where I'm coming from, I work part-time. I don't make much at my job, so when I purchase something I really have to look at the price. I either pay cash or put it on my credit card and pay it off every month. I've been lucky enough to be able to do this since June 2009. Due to how little I now make (I was let go from my very well paying job in 2009 and had to adjust), I am very conscious of what I spend.

I am sure if you're a runner, you know how pricey items can be. For me, Lululemon, Athletica, Brooks, etc. can be just out of my price range many a time. I honestly own no Lululemon or Athletica. I own some Brooks items, I wear Brooks Adrenaline sneakers and will occasionally grab a shirt or a jacket when I hit a running store (especially if they are on sale!).

So, what do I do to get items that allow me to train and to be excited about it? I seek out affordable pieces. One of the biggest I've found lately is Fila at Kohl's. Seriously. Fila makes some great stuff and if you purchase at Kohl's you know all about their sales and coupons. It can take an out of price range shirt/jacket into I've saved enough to get two.

Fila jacket at Shamrock Half Marathon March 2013
Fila shirt at the 2012 Baltimore Women's Classic 5k

The other part of the running equation is all the "extras." There are so many things - GPS systems, belts, water bottles, on-the-run nutrition, etc. Some items I can't help bring the cost down on. I pay what they cost and suck it up hoping that the money I save on other things make the costs even out.

This past weekend I was at TJ Maxx looking for something totally unrelated to running. But, I wandered over to the athletic area and found two items that I picked up. I grabbed a new water bottle I can use on a run that had a larger pocket than my current one for less than half of what I paid for my Nathan one.

That pocket is at least double the size of my old one, which I have a hard time keeping my car key, phone, and sports beans in. I picked this up for $12.99 rather than the ticket price of $24.99, which is less than the Nathan one I purchased several years ago for $30.00.

The other item I picked up was a utility belt. I have one that I've used for several years, again a Nathan because Nathan brand was cheaper than Spibelts. My Nathan is more of a pouch belt whereas this one is flat like the Spi.
I picked this up for $9.99 rather than the ticket price of $16.00, which again was less than my Nathan at $20.00, which was less than a Spibelt. I wore this yesterday for my run and really liked it, it is flat against my back and I didn't feel it bouncing around like the Nathan one I was using. I used the middle section for my phone and put my car key in a side section. I was very pleased with it and feel the bright green color will be good for visibility.

The last tip I have for you that I use a great deal is for my Sport Beans. This is what I use on a long run for energy and a package of them can be upwards of $1.50 each. I know that's not a lot, but... While wandering through Wal-Mart one day I saw they have Sports Beans. Now my favorite flavor is watermelon, which is somewhat hard to find. They do not have watermelon, but they have several flavors including assorted, which is what I will use when I don't have any watermelon. Oh did I mention they are 99 cents each? Yea. Fifty cents cheaper than other places.

There's my experience in saving money on running gear. You may already know all these things, you may have better ideas. If so, share! I'm always in need of saving money on my running habit equipment.

Finding a trigger

I've been running for more than 5 years now. Running was never anything I thought I could do. When I turned 30, I said I'm going to start. Umm...hubby started, I didn't. It wasn't for another couple years that I decided to go for it. I had the support of a friend who swore up and down that I could if I wanted to. She had faith that I had it in me.

I decided to try. I belonged to a gym that you did 30 second weights/30 second cardio for x amount of time as your workout. I decided I would take those 30 second cadio breaks for running. Sure, at first it was running in place, but I eventually started running around in a circle where the machines were. Then I upped it to a minute cardio/30 second weights. I kept this up until I could run 5-6 minutes straight. Then I took it outside and started running at a local park. Eventually I was able to work my way up to a mile. Woohoo! Who knew? My friend (and my husband!).

For the next 5 years I always had her support in running - I would get texts asking how runs went, comments about when I would race the next distance, advice on training programs, and just overall love and faith that I could do it. It was amazing having someone who shared her passion for running with someone who didn't think they could do it or run the next distance.

But, over the last year/year and a half we've spoken less, texted less, messaged less. I didn't have that support that I had when I started. It's been in the last year/year and a half that I've struggled with my running/working out. I haven't felt motivated to run. I haven't felt motivated to do my workouts. I've been struggling to want to go out there.

This past week I realized why. It's been because I lost my biggest cheerleader. I had someone who always had my back and tried their best to encourage me when I didn't know if I could do something. She was always right, but I was nervous. Without that external support, I foundered. It finally occurred to me that while I like to think I can do anything myself, having that person who loves you enough to help you do something you never thought you could leaves a huge void.

So, to lighten this post (sorry!), I am so happy I figured this out. It is sad. Loosing someone that important in your life is hard, but figuring out that this has been affecting me in such a way is fantastic! I now know that I need that encouragement and can work on finding those who would be open to being mutually supportive. I can't be the only one who needs that. A lost friendship is painful, but I learned a great deal from it.

Now to get on with training...

Learn something new

I love running in cold weather. It always makes me laugh a bit when people talk in the fall about slowing down for the winter and what other things you can work on until you start running again in the spring. For me, I go out and run in the cold. I like it. I prefer it to running hot in the summer, where I sweat constantly and just get overheated.

Yesterday I went out for a run, which has not been happening lately. I decided since we were expecting a snow storm to layer more than usual. I put on a pair of lycra pants under my running pants, then did my normal top - cold weather long sleeve, running jacket, then added my heavy jacket because it just seemed COLD. LOL! I finished it off with a headband and gloves.

What did I learn? I learned that those lycra pants were amazing! Normally, no matter how far I run in the winter, my thighs freeze and do not warm up. The rest of me will warm up - that heavy jacket would have been removed had I not been going for such a short run and the gloves helped my hands warm and may have come off too. But, wow. That extra layer of clothing on the legs made such a difference! At the end of my run, I told hubby I need to buy a few more pairs so I can layer up this winter. I'll need it for when training starts for The Love Run in January.

Have you learned something new about running lately? What do you wear when you run in these colder temps? Or, if you're in a warmer clime, what do you wear to keep yourself from overheating?

A bit of an update

So hello. How've you been? What cha been up to?

Me? Ahhhh...yea...well...I'm still alive, I just haven't been doing much that I felt you'd want to hear about...or more accurately, I wanted to share with you. Not that I've been robbing banks or anything, but I've not been doing a great job of being healthy and active. And when I'm not, I don't feel like I should be blogging. Yea...

Anyway... here's the quick run down. I'm hoping getting back into the whole blog thing will inspire to get back to other things.

  • I am not running the Philly Half Marathon in November. Why?
  • I am in physical therapy for hip pain that stems from my back issues. I decided I want to get my back and hips in as good as I can before pushing myself to 13.1 miles.
  • We went on vacation for a week, which hampered blogging...only because I didn't pre-write anything to post. LOL! Vacation kinda snuck up on me. It seemed so far away, then all of a sudden IT WAS TIME TO GO! I'll share what we did soon. :)
  •  My birthday was Wednesday. This getting older kinda sucks, but the alternative is worse.
So that's my life in a nutshell lately. Sorry it's been so long. What have YOU been doing?

First run in new sneakers!

You will remember that this week I got this lovely shoes:

Yesterday, I headed out to see how they would work.

I headed into the small town next to mine to run because there was a race going on at my normal running spot. I parked and headed off. I was aiming for 3 miles, but I figured I would go 3.1 anyway if I could swing it. I ran and I went really slow. It wasn't necessarily intentional, but I wasn't pushing it either. I figure, I haven't run consistently in months, whatever felt good was fine. Though I will say, the side streets in this little town are hilly. Maybe not the best place for a first run.

I got my run in. It wasn't fast. I stopped a few more times than I wanted to. I ran my normal half mile run/1 minute walk, and my times were pretty bad. But, it was a pretty nice morning. It wasn't yet in my running comfort zone weather-wise, but it could have been a lot worse (and has!). It was just nice to get out there and run a bit. Nothing too crazy, but a simple run.

And it was fantastic to spend the rest of the day and today without shin pain. Last regular run I went on my shins hurt for three days. That was when I knew I needed new shoes, even though I had only about 100 miles on them. Ugh. Sad. Hence those pretty shoes above.

I look forward to enjoying these shoes for the next 4-6 months. It makes me happy to lace up in green sneaks!

Weekend

It's the weekend and plans usually call for a run on Saturday and then to just chill. Saturday morning I woke up later than I thought I would. By the time I got out of bed, hubby had been up for hours and wanted breakfast, so I skipped my run and went to breakfast with him (we go to Dunkin Donuts every Saturday. It's a tradition we started about 5 years ago when I started running.). When we came home I tweeted, "A Saturday with nothing to do. What to do...what to do..." One of my Twitter friends responded with "do a little more training then maybe you have planned and then reward yourself!!! Everyday can be a fun day :-)"

And with that, I felt bad for having skipped my run. It was too hot and too late to go out for a run (plus I had just eaten a wake up wrap, donut, and iced coffee. I can't imagine that would have gone well with a run), but I could do an upper body workout and use my stationary bike. So, I did 5 rounds of upper body lifting and 60 minutes of my stationary bike. Not bad considering I usually do 3 rounds of upper body and 30 minutes on the stationary bike. I felt better.

But, something strange happened. It felt odd not going for a run this weekend. Not that I've been the best at running lately, but it still felt strange. So, this morning I got up and went for a run. Sadly, Garmin was dead and I had no idea. I only used it for the 5k last weekend, but I guess I forgot to turn it off. So, instead I used my Nano, which has the Nike+ system on it. It's not 100% accurate, but it was better than nothing. It was hot. I don't like hot. I was slow, but I kept a steady pace and ran almost the whole thing. The last few meters I walked, but it was hot. I had water with Nuun Tropical and a cold wash cloth waiting for me in the car and it was heavenly. LOL!

Came home and made lunch. Finished off my Nuun and while waiting for my low-fat waffles to toast I found Lilo and Stitch on Disney! One of my all-time favorite movies! Apparently the universe rewards following through on your plans to run. ;-)

So, I got an extra workout this weekend because I couldn't just replace my run with upper body workout and a stationary bike.

Did you get your workout in this weekend? Do you enjoy working out in the heat or are you more a cold weather person?

No half marathon training

This post might upset quite a few runners out there, but tomorrow, Saturday, June 8, 2013 is the first Saturday this year I am not training for a half marathon. Starting in December 2012, I was training for the Shamrock Half Marathon in March, then right after I started training for Zooma Annapolis Half Marathon. I've never done that before. Back to back half marathons. I usually run one in the winter/spring, then one in the fall. This year I put them both in the spring/summer.time frame.

I am inordinately excited about this. I know to those runners who love running and those who are injured this is going to sound like blasphemy, but... To me, it is a sense of relief. I like running. I like the feeling I get after a long run. I like the feeling after running faster than I thought I could. But, sometimes training for a long race feels like drudgery. I know, I know if it does I shouldn't do it. See the above reasons I like running (add in racing, seeing new sights, t-shirts, and medals).

So, tomorrow I may or may not go for a run. I may sleep in. I may go to the gym. Or I may lace up my sneakers and head out the door for a run. Who knows? I have the freedom tomorrow to do whatever I want!

Do you look forward to a time when long race training ends and you can relax?

National Running Day

Happy National Running Day! Today we honor the ability to run, whether it's a quarter mile or 100 miles. Who cares what the distance is, it is the ability to run we're celebrating!

Tonight, I'll be taking a run after work and my TRX class. Not sure how far, but I'll be heading off somewhere to get a mile or two in to participate.

Will you be running today? How many miles are on your agenda?

Zooma Annapolis Race Recap

Super long post. You may want to read in spurts.

Well, it's done. Yesterday was Zooma Annapolis Half Marathon day. It was not the experience I anticipated. Why? Oh...let me tell you.

Hubby and I left the house about 12:20 p.m., which was a little later than we anticipated, but not too bad. On our way down though, there was a truck in the lane next to us that caught on fire. We had NO idea how to tell the person. We were on a highway, how do you get someone's attention going 75 mph? Several people tried too, but couldn't. Eventually, the truck pulled over and all three people got out. There was a pretty high fireball, but it didn't explode. It was scary. I don't think my heart beat calmed down til we hit Annapolis.

We got to the hotel for packet pick-up about 2:20 p.m. We pulled into the Lowes, which I have stayed at before and parked. We were charged $5 to park in their lot, which wasn't great, but I'm sure a public lot would have been much more. We headed in and got in line for bib/swag. The lines took forever because people we picking up for others...not just one other, but multiple people. I saw someone walk out with 7 bags. Ugh. I got mine, which included my shirt, bag, and bib. I wondered why I didn't get the yoga mat and water bottle they promised. This upset me a bit.

I then wandered the expo and picked up a few things. I grabbed a Zooma 3/4 zip jacket and a purple shirt that I had seen before and wanted. Pricey. But, what isn't at an expo?

I also grabbed a shirt, card, and flower at Fellow Flowers, a great inspirational company that I've been told has been up a year and doing amazingly well! Their stuff was very reasonable. I also wore the flower in my hair the next morning. I liked the people at the booth and they had some really nice stuff.

After the expo, we wandered a bit to find a bite to eat. We hadn't eaten since breakfast and wanted something. Stopped at Fado's and had a yummy cider and this:

A yummy cheese dip with boxy chips! They were amazing! When the waitress saw we had more cheese, but no chips? She brought us out a whole new plate of chips! Yum!

We headed back to the Lowe's to get our car so we could check into our hotel. It was uneventful trip, other than Garmin getting us lost (what's new? Garmin doesn't like us.). Check in was quick. We got into the room, I laid out my gear for Saturday morning, and we watched A Knight's Tale for a bit.

Loved this shirt!

We got ourselves cleaned up and changed, then headed back to the Lowe's for the Honest Tea Mocktail Party. I'll be honest, I was disappointed here. They asked for you to RSVP to the event, which I thought that was because there would be drinks (Honest Tea), snacks, etc. they had to account for numbers. When we got there, the Honest Tea people had changed their table around so to make drinks mixing their different products, but that was it. No snacks. No separate room. No checking RSVP. I'm not saying they should have turned people away if they didn't RSVP, but what was the point of doing so in the first place? We had one drink and left. There was nothing making this worth our time of driving back down town. Complete waste of time.

We tried to get a table at a place down the street for dinner, but without reservations it was an hour wait. No. Thanks. I've got 13.1 miles to run in the morning. Gotta get to bed at some point. So, we went back to the Lowe's and got a table at West. We waited about 20 minutes for an inside table. Grabbed a drink at the bar and watched the O's. When we were seated, our table faced the TV's. Hubby was happy. :)

Dinner was tasty. We started by sharing a pizza. The waiter said it was just barely big enough as an appetizer for two, more like a personal pizza for one. Ummmm....no? It was much larger than we anticipated, so we added a shared mac 'n cheese and we each had a salad.

Cell phone pic, sorry for the blurriness
After dinner, we headed back to the hotel. Since everything was laid out, didn't have much to do. Put the ole jammies on, got our wake-up call, and hit the sack. That 5:00 a.m. wake up call would come pretty quick!
And it did! LOL! I'm not a morning person, so anything before 8:00 - 8:30 a.m. is early to me (no, I don't not have children). Got up and got ready. It was quick since everything was laid out and ready. Yea! We were ready to leave almost on time. There were lots of racers in our hotel. We saw all sorts of people heading to their cars, which made it easy to find Navy Stadium. LOL! Follow all the cars.

We arrived on time, parked our car (really close to start/finish. Yea!), then headed to the port-a-potties. Figured night as well. Then did some stretching before the race.

The start was a little confusing. I didn't know which direction to go to get in line. There were no corrals or times. Hubby and I both went in because there was room on the side for spectators to sit. We chatted, then hubby decided to go outside against the fencing to watch.
Here's where I'll be honest. As soon as I saw the weather was going to be in the low-to-mid 70s at the start, I'd been freaking out. I don't do well in the heat. I hate running in it. I hate doing lots of things in it. I even worried about that when I signed up initially that it could be really hot come race day. And as I stood there waiting for the race to start, I struggled not to cry. Which I had trying to hold back for the past 24 hours. I just knew this was not going to be a good race. I knew I would struggle. I knew that it would be miserable.

And we're off! We ran through the big Zooma inflatable start/finish and meandered through the Navy Stadium parking lot before heading into the streets of Annapolis.

Had a little difficulty at the start when my Nano didn't want to work. Honestly, had I not gotten it to work, I would quit right there. I was already doubting what the hell I was doing. But, it finally started playing and kept going. Maybe a mistake?

There were lots of little hills throughout the first part of the race around the stadium. Not too bad, but there. When we came back to Taylor Street, I saw hubby! He came to the one side of the street to cheer me on. We were just over a mile into the race.

It really was good to see him. I was disappointed on the other three sides of the stadium where people lined up to cheer. It surprised me how upset I was getting not seeing him. But, there he was. He saw me first and called my name. Then took some pics. From here, I was one my own...along with all the other racers of course. ;-)

We headed from here into downtown Annapolis. We crossed a pretty stone bridge into the city and around the pretty architecture of the city. It really is a gorgeous city! There were lots of hills here and basically that's all Annapolis is...hills. I'm not kidding. We went around town, down through downtown (I say this because it was a steep downhill), then past the Naval Academy. Slightly disappointed we didn't run through it, but what can you do?

Lots of hills and to this point, I'm running pretty strong. I'm running the hills and I'm thinking this isn't too bad. My times are keeping with that I need for a PR, even running a little ahead of schedule. I was ok with this, figuring the hills later in the race would slow me down and this will be my cushion. Had I known that there was so little flatness to the course...

We came through the city to the Navy Bridge and oh my good Lord. You want me to run that??? Twice??

It's hard to tell from this photo, but it's steep and it's not pleasant doing it twice. As we get to the top of this portion of the race, the 10k peeps get to turn back. Lucky bastards runners. At this point, I honestly considered making the turn and just doing the 10k rather than the half, but that would have been one pricey 10k, so I kept going. Over the bridge and into some weird race course. We ran along a highway for a bit, then turned onto a side road. It was disheartening because you never really knew what was going on. It just seemed to go on forever. And constant hills, very little flat ground to let you catch your breath.

When I got to the turn around point, there were three ladies there to cheer you on. They were amazing! They cheered, high-fived, and generally made you happy to have reached them. I have to give it to Annapolis, they had some great volunteers at this race. Many had the Black Girls Run shirts on and man, I want to join them! They were awesome! Cheering each other on when they saw each other on the course, keeping a positive attitude, volunteering, being fantastic to those who were running by. They embodied the running community to me yesterday. I seriously wonder if they'd take this white girl?

After turning around normally, it makes me happy because I know I have less to run than I ran. This time it didn't matter. I saw the 9 mile sign and texted hubby "Coming up to mile nine. Walking. Can't run." I wanted him to know since I had so hoped to finish under 3 hours. At this point, I knew it wasn't going to happen. I knew I was going to be lucky to finish below 3:10:00. Oh what a joke.

From that point forward I walked. There was an occasional downhill that I jogged, but the quads were unhappy and didn't want me to use them at all. They wanted me to sit down on the side of the road and never move again. Mentally, I can't say I wasn't with them on that. I walked. I tried estimating my finish time and came to about 3:05:00. That wouldn't be horrible, just 3 minutes slower than Shamrock in March and 4 minutes faster than AC from October. Ok.

On my way back over the hill, a poor girl was on the side sitting when the medical personal golf cart came up to her. I came up and asked if she was ok. Apparently she had just thrown up. Medical staff were giving her cold water. I'm not sure what happened from there, but I was a little scared. This girl was fit, she was thin and looked healthy. If she got sick, what about me? I was already nervous because I wasn't sweating the way I was early on. I was thinking I might be a bit overheated with heat dehydration. I contemplated stopping at a police officer and asking for medical personnel. I didn't. Mistake? Maybe.

As I'm on my way back to the stadium, there is a side street with people walking up it with bibs on. There is no course marshal or anything and the two people in front of me crossed the street and kept going. I asked the traffic person who said the race actually continues down the side street. Wha??? Good Lord. So, I turn left and I am the only person I see going my way. I have no idea where I'm going, but I keep plodding long. And this is where I felt completely lost. There were NO course directors out there. I finally caught up to someone so I could follow them, but wow. There was no one helping us back of the packers figure out what to do. This part of the race was just randomness for miles. There was a water station on both sides of the street, which was nice, but other than that, this part sucked! Hit the turn around from this part and started back. On my way, the gentleman who was my "guide" was on the sidewalk getting sick with two medics. Poor man.

I kept going. As I walked, I told those behind me where to go. I know I felt lost as I walked with no one ahead of me, so I tried helping those behind me. I got back to the main street and make a left towards the stadium. Up a hill (surprised?), make a left to a bit of a downhill (which I ran), then make one more right and wow...the stadium. The finish was close! So close that I actually said that. And the woman next to me asked what? I told her, "See that gray building? That's the stadium. We're almost done." She yelled out in surprised and thanked me. Apparently, she was feeling it too. She got ahead of me, lucky girl! But, I kept going. I got to the stadium, allowed an ambulance out of the stadium, and walked to just under a tenth of a mile, then started running to the finish.

And thank the good Lord, I am finished! I honestly didn't think it would ever happen. Yes, that clock said 3:23:17. It's not 100% accurate because that's gun time, but...

I crossed the line and waited for hubby to come around. A nice woman I saw on the course, spritzed me with water. When hubby arrived, we headed to water/food. On the way, I picked up my yoga mat, water bottle, and necklace. There would be no medal for me this day. We walked through the entire expo area and could not find water. Nothing. I stayed under a nice awning while hubby went back seeking water. Apparently, it was at the finish line in a black bucket that wasn't marked and no one there to give it to you. Thanks Zooma for caring about the back of the packers in 84 degree temps. I took my sneakers off and put on my brand new Nike cushioned flip flops. Love them!

I felt like crap, so I wanted out. No wine. No food. No expo. Though, the expo was basically the same people from the night before. I didn't see anything different. We walked to the car and the best thing ever was the air conditioning. I finally started feeling better. Hubby said we got late check-out at the hotel, thank God! I was able to head back to shower rather than just pack. A shower never felt so nice...minus out the chafing...in a not so pleasant place.

Changed and we headed to Pusser's for lunch. It was really the one thing I wanted to do. We had to wait for a table (not surprised!), so we sat on the deck enjoying a celebratory drink.

Painkiller
The reason I like this place is for the view. The food is good. The drinks are good. But the view? Amazing!

I had a yummy salad and sweet potato fries. Not typical post-race food (of which I got nothing from Zooma itself), but I was still overheated and wanted nothing hot. The salad was great and the sweet potato fries were sweet. Perfect! We hung around there until about 3:00 p.m., then headed home. It had been a long day.
