You may have heard there was a small earthquake here on the East Coast today. I will admit, I was a little shocked. It's not like this is something we deal with all that often around here. Our crazy weather sometimes involves remnants of hurricanes and snow. Sometimes random flooding, but nothing too major. We've had a few more tornadoes over the last few summers, but just tiny ones with minimal damage. We're just lucky to be in an area where crazy weather stuff is rare.
But today, today. There was an earthquake. Apparently, it hit a town in Virginia called Mineral, which was close to Washington, D.C. I'm glad they said that because I had never heard of Mineral. Anywho... I was interning at the Archives today and happened to be here when it happened.
I was on the 17th floor researching information for a patron who needed confirmation her school was legitimate when she graduated. As I sat all the way up at the top of the Tower, I began to feel a rumbling at my feet and the floor started to shake. Now, I've heard some strange noises up there that I didn't think too much about the shaking floor. I wasn't up there alone and when asked if I felt the floor shaking, I looked up from the Accreditation Report I was reading to see my co-worker swaying. It was kinda weird. When I stated she was swaying, it did not go over well, so we headed down to the ground level. We walked into the Research Room (which was closed to the public today) and slowly, but surely people started wandering in asking if the floor shook where we were. When we stated we were on the 17th floor (which is as high as you can go in the Tower besides the roof), everyone was shocked.
Now, my experience is in no way reflective of the magnitude earthquakes can reach, but to me it was an interesting adventure. We had no damage (as far as I can tell) at the Archives and my house was fine. I probably wouldn't have noticed anything truly amiss had my co-worker not been on the floor with me. I would have continued on with my research until someone came up to check on me. LOL! I thought it was an experience I never thought to have since it's rare to have earthquakes you can feel here on the East Coast.
What about you? Did you feel the earthquake? Do you have a story?
