Happy Adoption Day Miss Elizabeth the Kitten!

Seven years ago today, I signed the adoption papers on Miss Elizabeth the Kitten, a cute little thing who stole hubby and my heart at the PetSmart. She was a tiny little kitty who wasn't exceedingly playful, but loved attention. She would come out of her cage and I would put her on my lap. She would curl up in a ball and just purr and purr. When we would put her back, she would give us kitty kisses and it broke my heart having to leave her.

We talked about it for a month, then decided we had to bring her home. She has been with us since that evening seven years ago and it's like she's always been here. We still consider her a kitten since she's no bigger than a newborn baby. She is everything you want a cat to be - cuddly, soft, friendly, playful, funny. She wants nothing more than to curl up on your lap and stay there for hours. She loves to curl up under the blankets in bed and just sleep the night away with us. She get angry when you remove her from where she wants to be (she's the only cat I know that growls on a regular basis). She's often scared of things - her bowl, her brothers, car noises, us. And she may not be the smartest kitten, but she is one of the most loving.

So Happy Adoption Day Miss. Elizabeth! We love you very much!

Poor kitty

My poor little kitty Elizabeth has a kitty cold. She's sniffly and been sneezing a great deal. She'll be fine. She's had these before, but I always feel so bad for her. She's the sweetest, friendliest kitty I know, so she's still purring. She is a bit more clingy today than usual (which means she's on top of us all the time. LOL!). Hopefully she starts feeling better because all I want to do is cuddle her and make her feel better.

Some positiveness

Lately I've been a little down on the ole blog.  Sorry!  It wasn't my intent.  So, in honor of trying to get things back on the positive side, kitty pictures!  Cats have taken over the internet and I for one approve.  Here are my cuties and a little personality description because cats DO have personalities!

Higgenbaffum
Higgy, Higs, Baffum, H-bomb, Tabby, Tabs, Higgy the Baffum
Higgy was the first kitty I adopted in 1998.  There was an ad in the newspaper offering free kittens.  My mom and I headed over and the woman brought out a basket with three kittens in it, two black and white kittens and a tabby.  I'm partial to black kitties and figured they would be making the trip home with me.  And then I looked at the box I brought with me to take home said kittens.  There was a tabby in it!  And sucker that I am, I did not have the heart to take him out.  He came home that day.

Pooka is Higgy's brother.  He was one of the little black kittens in the basket.  Once I realized the tabby was coming home, I had to make a decision between the two black kitties since I was only allowed two.  I put my hand into the basket to see if one would come over.  One did.  I picked him up and he immediately purred.  I was done.  He came home in my little box.  Such a sucker for a purring kitty...

Elizabeth is a PetSmart adoption kitten.  Hubby and I were volunteering at PetSmart by cleaning the kitty cages and playing with them when we met Elizabeth.  She was a skinny little thing who was very clingy.  She would curl herself into a little ball and settle onto my lap.  She would lie there and purr and purr and purr.  We fell in love with her.  After about a month we decided this little cutie needed to come home with us and we adopted her in 2006.  When she was weighed by the vet, she was 6 pounds!  She has since gained more weight, but I still remember her being this pathetic little thing we brought home.

These furballs are 100% members of our little family.  I can't imagine life without them.  What about you?  Do you have furfriends?  Do they have their own personalities?

Heading out to eat

Tonight, the hubby and I are heading out to a local place called Isaac's for dinner.  Why? And why do I share this?  Well, tonight is SPCA night at our local Isaac's.  Go into lunch or dinner tonight, bring in a coupon from the SPCA, and 25% of our meal total gets donated to them.  We have a soft spot for the SPCA.  We started volunteering there shortly after we moved and fell in love with a little kitten named Elizabeth...

She was about a year and a half when we saw her at the PetSmart.  Apparently, her owners decided they had too many cats and had to give one up.  We're assuming because she was going to have a litter, that's why they chose her, because if you've ever met her you would know she is the best little kitty around!

So, tonight we head to Isaac's for dinner.  We're going to enjoy a meal and enjoy the fact that we're helping a great local organization!  What are you doing to help your local non-profits?

Friday!

It's Friday!  Woohoo!  I've always liked Fridays, even when I wasn't doing anything (like the last 2 years) because even if it meant nothing to me, at least hubby wasn't working.  But, now with the archives, Fridays are great again!

It was a busy week at the archives.  Monday, I learned how to mend historic documents.  Which was awesome!  Tuesday, I spent my day doing research into documents written by or to George Washington.  Yup, that George Washington.  Wednesday, I spent the morning researching some more, but also learning to page in the research room.  This means, when people come into the archives to research, I head up into the Tower to grab the box or carton they want to look at.  So, looks like I'll be adding that to my duties as well this summer.  Thursday, I continued working on the Washington papers, then spent the afternoon cleaning Civil War muster out rolls.  What a fun week!  There's always something new and fun going on.  :-)

We had a bit of a scare this week with Elizabeth.  She's our little kitty, who is generally pretty unadventuresome.  The other evening, hubby couldn't find her.  Which isn't that unusual.  She tends to sleep alot and sometimes hides when she does so.  But, he was in the kitchen and started hearing noises in the ceiling.  So, he asks if I've seen her and since I hadn't, we started wondering where she could be.  He heads upstairs to the bathroom and sees the cabinet door open and Pooka staring into it...straight into a hole in the wall.  Turns out our unadventuresome kitten had crawled into the hole and was wondering around inside the walls!  I grabbed the treat bag, called her name, and shaked the bag.  She came out.  Phew!  Silly little cat!  We are now being more careful with that cabinet.

Elizabeth the Kitten, who crawled into the walls of the house this week.

On the never-ending battle to lose weight, I am down another pound this week.  Finally!  I am in the next 10 pound range!  I haven't seen numbers like these since May 2010, before we headed to Europe.  Shesh!  I'm very happy to be here and am hoping to keep going.  I have 27.6 pounds to go by the end of the year.  It's totally doable!
Thought I would update the goals for June (because I tend to forget I set goals).  Not too shabby!

1. Lose 2.5 pounds. - down 1 this week, 1.5 to go
2. Run 20 miles (I'm already at 13 for the month.) - up to 16 miles, with a 5k this Sunday
3. Bike 50 miles (I'm already at 38 for the month) - up to 47.5 miles

So, not too shabby with those goals.  I see hitting goals 2 & 3.  We shall see about goal 1.  I don't mean to sound pessimistic, but weight loss seems to be coming in 1 pound increments lately.  If I miss my goal by .5 pounds, eh.  No biggie.  It's still a loss and that's what matters in the long run.  But, I'm going to try hard to hit that 1.5 pound mark by Thursday!

Happy Adoption Day!

Happy Adoption Day Miss. Elizabeth the Kitten!

5 years ago, my hubby and I were volunteering at the local SPCA here in town.  We were responsible for going to the PetSmart in town and cleaning out the cages of the cats for adoption, as well as getting them some exercise (playing with them!) and chatting to people who stopped by the cages to help get them adopted.

One night, when we came into the cage area there was this adorably small kittenesque cat in the cage.  Apparently, the owners had determined they had too many cats and decided to give one up.  Once at the SPCA, she had a litter of kittens and she was the only one left as all her kittens had been adopted out.  We opened her cage and she came right over to us.  She was quiet and seemed sad, but purred like crazy and curled herself up on my lap when I sat down.  She was just the most adorable thing.

Two weeks later, we returned to PetSmart to help with the cages and she was still there.  We were floored.  How could this adorable, sweet kitten-cat still be sitting in one of those cages?  She again purred like crazy when we pulled her out of her cage to clean it.  She again curled up in a little ball on my lap.  We started talking about adopting her.

Now, the issue lied in we had two cats at home - Higgy and Pooka who were 8 years old.  Would they adjust to having a new cat come in at their age?  We debated for a couple of weeks, asked people we knew who had brought a third (or second cat) into the home, and kept thinking about it.  The next time we went into PetSmart, she was still there.  So cute, so sweet, so alone...

The next day, I was home sick from work and hubby was at the office in Harrisburg.  We decided to adopt.  I went out to the SPCA (which was about a 45 minute drive away) and signed the paperwork.  Because we were volunteers, they told us just to take the paperwork over ourselves and take her home.  So, that evening, we bought a cat carrier, showed the paperwork to the PetSmart manager, and brought home Elizabeth the Kitten.

5 years later, it is still one of the smartest decisions we have ever made.
