Throwback Thursday

Throwback Thursday! This week is a photo of me running the 2011 Princess Half Marathon. It was my very first half marathon ever! I picked this photo because this coming weekend is the Princess Half Marathon in Disney, so it seemed appropriate.

Would you believe hubby was on the monorail going to the first stop we agreed to meet at and he saw me on the road!I'm dead center in blue with black pants to the bottom of the road. I was shocked it timed itself out that way.

Since the 2011 Disney Princess Half Marathon I've run six more half marathons - Philadelphia Half Marathon {2011}, Shamrock Half Marathon {2012, 2013}, Zooma Annapolis Half Marathon {2013}, and The Love Run {2014}. This year I'm already scheduled for three halves - Shamrock Half Marathon, The Love Run, and The Wild Half.

What was your first race?

Mental Mindset (running)

The  last time I ran 10 miles it looked like this.  Yup, snow everywhere.  It was the end of January and I was 6 weeks out from the Disney Princess Half Marathon.  I was nervous, but kinda excited.  Not only was I going to run 10 miles for the first time, I was going to do it in the snow.  Bad-ass baby!

And I did. It was kinda boring. I had to run around lots of snow, un-cleared sidewalks, and watch out for ice.  But, I did it.  And it would be the longest run before the Princess Half Marathon.  For reasons I can't remember, I never managed to get my 12 miler in.  I would like to say it had something to do with snow, but I have a feeling it had more to do with being lazy.  I didn't run that week.  The following week I ran 8 miles.  I had high hopes of running my 12 that day, but uh, it was the windiest day ever. Windy as in siding was coming off someone's house, a mailbox came out of the ground, and someone's lawn ornaments were rolling down the street.  That 12 mile run went down to 10 then 8.  I decided I wanted to live to see the Disney Princess Half Marathon.

And I ran the Disney Princess Half Marathon the following Sunday.  Ran the whole thing with only having run 10 as my longest training run.  And last Saturday I had a 10 mile training run.  Now, I have no desire to run.  I feel like it's time to run the Philly Half Marathon.  I am ready to go.  I'm not prepared for another 8 weeks of training, of running, of not racing in the Philly Half Marathon.  What's up with that?

As I've said in the past, I love this program.  I love how it works with my lazy running attitude.  I'm just not sure I was prepared for being this  prepared for Philly already.  I'm going to need major motivation for the next 8 weeks...

6 Month Review

Wow!  Can you believe it's July 1st already?  It seems like yesterday that it was freezing out and we were all wishing it was warmer.  Now it's warmer and I'm wishing it were colder.  LOL!  But, I'm a bigger fan of winter than summer.  Blasphemy I know.  ;-)

Thought I would do a big recap rather than just my typical weekly one.  It's been enlightening seeing where I am compared to the beginning of the year.  Some of it good, some of it kinda sad actually...

Exercise

I kinda impressed with myself on this front.  I've been using Daily Mile to record my miles this year.  I used it last year too, but I know I didn't do a great job on getting every workout in.  This year, I've been much better at getting on.  I like seeing the monthly numbers.  :-)

Running - 147 miles
Biking - 183 miles

Not bad!  Now, remember I said I didn't record my workouts as religiously last year as I have this.  I went back to Daily Mile to see what I did between Jan. and June 2010 and I came up with 34.53 miles.  ROFLOL!  I guess I did better this year than last.  ;-)  And I did bike at all last year, so I sure beat that record!

Races

I hit the road running this year in the races category!  I've participated in 5 races so far this year.  Not too shabby.  I've done a half marathon, three 5ks, and a failure of a duathlon.

Weight

Oddly enough, I've basically stayed the same since the beginning of the year.  The last record I have of my weight is right before Christmas and I'm the same as I was then.  Ugh.  Basically, this means I've been playing with about 6-7 pounds for 6 months.  I need to get my butt in gear to stay here and then go down.  I have lofty goals at this point.  6 months to lose about 30 pounds.  It's doable.  I've done it before.  But, this time it's the last 30 pounds.  Always the hardest mentally and physically.

Job
Well, I started the year off employed, then not so much.  Then spent two months waiting to volunteer at either the State Museum of Pennsylvania or the Pennsylvania State Archives.  I had the chance to work the Civil War 150 trailer when it was in Harrisburg.  Which was pretty awesome!  Really enjoyed that.  Then, shortly afterwards, I interviewed with the Archives and started volunteering/interning about a month later.

The Archives have been great!  So much more what I want to be doing with my life than anything I've done in the past (except when getting my MA).  I love basically everything I've been doing - researching, helping other people research, finding document locations, and cleaning historic documents.  And they have given me some amazing opportunities - learn to mend historic documents, behind-the-scenes tours of the Railroad Museum and the Cornwall Iron Furnace, a trip to the top of the Capitol Dome, and the chance to take the PHMC's Archives Without Tears 2-day seminar.  Absolutely incredible experience and fantastic people!  Loving it!!

Conclusion

So, not a bad first half to the year. I'm signed up for my second half marathon already.  I'm running the Philadelphia Half Marathon on November 20, 2011 (Best Time of Your Life).  Hubby ran the half in 2009 and 2010, but this year he's challenging himself to the full.  So, I thought I'd throw my hat in the ring and run the half.  Why not?  ;-)  We also have in mind quite a few 5ks, just have to decide which ones to go with.

I've got a weight loss goal of 30 pounds by the end of the year...when we go to Jamaica to celebrate our 10 year wedding anniversary!  So excited!  We'll be hitting Couples, an all-inclusive resort and renewing our vows on the beach.  Ahhh...

I have no delusions of getting a job by the end of the year, but I will continue on with the archives.  I really like it and since I'm not officially interning, I can stay on until whenever, which I plan on doing.  LOL!  I'm going to work my butt off getting experience and then hoping, praying, wishing a job somewhere opens up.  If you'd like to throw out some good vibes to the universe, I would be appreciative.

So, that's it.  The last 6 months in a quick review (with photos!).  Hopefully, the second half of the year is just as fun and exciting!!

The rest of the week...

After running a half marathon, what do you do?  Well, obviously, go to Disney World.  LOL!  Which I did.  Super Bowl winners have nothing on me.  ;-)  But, what do you do once you're home again?  If you're me, you get sick.  I have spent the last week (Tuesday through Sunday...and counting) sick.  I had two lovely days (Tuesday and Wednesday) of a sore throat, which was oh so fun.  Then, starting Thursday, the sore throat went away, but the cold attacked.  I have been dealing with the lovely head cold since Thursday.  It has not been a lot of fun around these parts the past week.  It's great when you can gloat about running a half marathon, but then you then get brought low by the common cold.  Oh the humanity!

Hoping the upcoming week holds better (and less germy) things.sick

Recap of the Disney's Princess 1/2 Marathon

Thank you to everyone for the fantastic support you have given me over the past few months!  You all made me feel so loved!  So, here's how it all went down!

Brian and I were up by 2:15 a.m. to get ready to get the bus.  We had been told the day before that the lines to get on the shuttle buses would be long and to get there early.  So, we were in line by 3:00 a.m. along with many other people!  It was dark and fairly chilly (though not the chilly of the North, the chilly of "hey! It's FL and I'm shivering!"

We reached the staging area about 3:15 a.m. and had to wait around.  There were so few people there at that hour!  LOL!  Guess we overestimated a bit.  ;-)  But, it was good to just know I was there.  We took the time to take some photos

and decided where to meet after the race.  With 16,000+ signed up to race, finding each other after wards might not be so easy.

About 4:30 a.m., I headed off to the start line...which turned out to be a long walk along a dark road.  Seriously.  I believe we walked about 20 minutes to the start line.  It was something no one was happy about.  And once at the start area, it was a long wait.

It was a wave start, which was fine.  I was in the last wave, so had the opportunity to see everything as it went down.  The first to head off were the wheelchair racers, which turned out to be one person.  The half marathon began with the Fairy Godmother magically opening the race and fire works lighting the sky.  We were all impressed with the fireworks.  And as those of us in Corral F waited, there were lots of bantering among those on the platform.  The one thing I remember is a joke the Fairy Godmother made - Why does Peter Pan always fly around? Find out at the end of the post!  ;-)

What we of Corral F were thrilled with was that each wave started off with fire works.  It was great to know that all of the racers had that fabulous start.  As I got closer to the start line, I got nervous for the first time all morning.  I was happy the nerves only lasted a little bit.  I think it was because I met a lovely lady who was also running her first half marathon...and her first race ever.  She was so sweet and we just had fun chatting before the race!  And before I knew it, the Fairy Godmother was starting our wave and the fire works were going off.

The start was a mess.  Too many people in too small an area.  My first mile was awful time-wise because I just couldn't get past people.  At times, I would just run on the grass to get moving.  The first mile was rougher than I thought it would be and was really disappointed with my first mile time.  But, I kept moving and hoping for the best.

The course was fun from the start.  Lots of characters and music along the course.  There were great high school bands who played some great up-temp music and then the characters started.  The first one I really remember is the pirate boat and pirates from Pirates of the Caribbean.  And wow did Jack Sparrow look like Jack Sparrow!  The pirate ship was very popular with the ladies.  LOL!  (I'll be honest, I don't remember every single character, so when I talk about characters on the course know that they aren't all-inclusive.)

I remember crossing the 3 mile mat for timing purposes and thinking, "just 10 miles to go!"  Shortly after crossing the mat, I got totally excited.  Up ahead was Lilo and Stitch!  I hadn't stopped for anything yet and in the back of my mind, I wasn't going to stop.  But, IT WAS LILO AND STITCH!  I stopped.  :-)  I didn't take many, but there was no WAY I was skipping Lilo and Stitch.

And off I went again, sending a quick text of the photo to a few people.  I did have a qualm about sending it since it was early...though I really had no idea what time it was.

The heat started kicking in.  It was a decent start, as the race began before dark and it was chilly.  A bit humid, but decent.  Then the sun rose and the lack of shade was killer.  The change in temperature from training in 30 degrees to running in 65-70 degrees hurt.  Bad.  But, I kept running.

Shortly after Lilo and Stitch was the entrance to the Magic Kingdom...which was deceiving.  I never realized how far away the car entrance was to the actual park.  We were all sorely disappointed when the park didn't appear quickly.  As we reached a part of the entrance of the Magic Kingdom, I saw Brian for the first time.  He made it to the area just past mile 4 and it was so fun to see him there!

We ran around the parking lot until we started into the park.  I anticipated coming in the front gates, but nope.  We came in through a side road and then up Main Street towards the Castle.  It was amazing seeing it there in front.

As we went up Main Street, we took a right into Tomorrowland.  It was fun running through and there were more characters in the park, including Twiddle Dee and Twiddle Dum, which I thought odd.  And it was nice as we ran through the park that so many cast members came out to cheer on the runners.  We wound our way through the park until the reached the back of Cinderella's Castle.  The approach to the Castle was fun - off to the side was Minnie, Mickey, and Prince Charming for photos and above them were two heralds who blew their horns as you headed through the castle.  It was impressive.  We came through the other side and down the right side of the path and down to Frontierland.  Then it was through the park and into a back area used for storage.  IN that area were three parade floats that once again we available for photographs.  One was for Aladdin with the Genie, one was for Cinderella, and one was a pirate ship.

At this point, I knew I had passed the 6 mile mark in the race.  Sadly, I thought to myself that I was halfway done, then I did the math and realized not quite.  LOL!  It was ok though.  I felt good and I kept moving forward.  The fun part of the race was over though, as the rest of the race was along the highway until reaching Epcot for the final approximate half a mile.  They did try to help out with more characters and such.  I saw Jasmine, Sleeping Beauty and Prince Charming along with a bed (which was freaking hilarious! You could get your photo taken with the bed as well and many people jumped on it for their photo!), Donald Duck dressed in golf attire on the golf course.  I stopped one last time to be photographed with Cinderella's Carriage and a footman.  He was so sweet too actually.  As I walked up to him, he said "I like your red hair.  It reminds me of Ariel."  LOL!  He actually was very sweet and made me smile. Which at this point was a tall order!

I saw Brian again just past mile 8.  He almost missed me as I ran by though.  I saw him and waved.  Just before I started to yell, he looked up and saw me.  It was fantastic seeing him again.  Even though he said he would be out on the course, I wondered if we'd really see each other on the course.

From there it was a struggle.  I was excited when I hit the 10 mile marker, thinking I only had a 5k to go.  Which was the way I thought in all my training runs.  Break it down into bits that you have done before and it always worked.  Well, this time it was tough.  I chalk it up to two things - 1. the heat and 2. having not run more than 10 miles in training.  It was also at this point that many of the people who were running started walking more, making it much more difficult to keep going.  Constantly having to run on the grass or having to slow down because the person in front of me randomly stopped.  It was a struggle.

Around the 11 mile mark we hit a tough hill.  You ran around an entrance ramp (which at the middle of the curb had an army Sargent from Toy Story there for photos.  When I came around the bend, I heard the last bits of Hogan's Heroes playing, which totally made me smile.) and then the hill.  Oh it was not fun, but I had heard about a hill at mile 9 that would be rough and I figured this must have been it as there was no hill at mile 9.  And maybe it was the mile they were referring to.  On the other hand, when we hit about mile 12 there was another hill.  Which just seemed mean.  Once over the ramp, there was a live band playing music as you entered the parking lot to Epcot.  Hitting Epcot lifted everyone's spirits as the finish line was just past the park.  On the way in, we saw the mom from The Impossibles (I think, I'm not as up to date on the new Disney movies) and Mulan.  Then it was into the park.  Around the ball to the lake, then back again.  As we left the park, with less than a quarter mile to go, we made a turn and there was a full gospel choir smiling and singing us on.  It was great!

From there, a few more turns and I could see the finish line.  It was the best thing in all the kingdom!  :-)  Seeing the world FINISH ahead lifted a weight from my shoulders.  I knew I had it then.  I knew I could finish.  As I approached the finish line, I saw Brian cheering me on.  It was great seeing him so close to the end as we had no idea if he would be able to get to the finish line and be there in time to see me cross.
Cross the finish line was a crazy feeling.  Relief. Happiness. Pain.  LOL!  As I continued forward, there was a nice woman who beckoned me over to place my amazing medal around my neck.  That was a feeling I would love to relive again.  :)  Then it was off to the finish area to grab snacks (blueberry muffin.  Yes!  A blueberry muffin! and Poweraid).  I headed to out to meet up with Brian and tell him everything I've written down here.

Thank you again to all everyone who has said an encouraging word throughout this whole crazy process.  I honestly had no idea if I could manage it or not, and everyone's unwavering support sure made it easier to get through some of the rough miles along the highway.  THANK YOU!

Oh, and why does Peter Pan always fly?  Because he can Never Never Land.  ;-)

Last Run

Had my last run before the half on Sunday.  It amazes me people who do not clean off their sidewalks.  Makes for a treacherous run, that's for sure!  And I thought about that as I ran.  The next time I'm running (Sunday), it will be 60+ and sunny.  A far cry from the 29 and sunny I had today.

I am still a little freaked out about Sunday, but the planning and packing right now has me somewhat calm.  But, as I was wandering the side streets running, I kept thinking how early I'll be up to run.  And for a night owl, this doesn't bode well for a good night's sleep.  Trying to decide how early to go to bed so I might get a few hours of sleep before getting my butt on the bus.  Have to be in the corral area at 5:00 a.m., even though I don't start until after 6:00 a.m.  Ugh.

If nothing else, it will be nice to get out of the freezing temperatures of the Mid-Atlantic.  The temps for this weekend:

Friday - H: 85 ~ L: 60
Saturday - H: 84 ~ L: 60
Sunday - H: 85 ~ L: 62

That low of 62 is sure going to kill when I'm used to a low of 22!

High Wind Warning

Sat, Feb 19, 2011, 12:00 AM EST

HIGH WIND WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 9 PM EST THIS EVENING
* LOCATION... ALL OF CENTRAL PENNSYLVANIA.
* WINDS... SUSTAINED NORTHWEST WINDS OF 20 TO 30 MPH... WITH GUSTS OF 50 TO 60 MPH.
* TIMING... THROUGH THIS EVENING.
* IMPACTS... DOWNED TREE LIMBS. LOCALIZED POWER OUTAGES POSSIBLE FROM TREES FALLING ON UTILITY LINES.
PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...
A HIGH WIND WARNING MEANS A HAZARDOUS HIGH WIND EVENT IS EXPECTED OR OCCURRING. SUSTAINED WIND SPEEDS OF AT LEAST 40 MPH OR GUSTS OF 58 MPH OR MORE CAN LEAD TO PROPERTY DAMAGE.

So, yea.  Doesn't that sound like fun?  Today was my last long run before the Disney Princess Half Marathon and the schedule said 8 miles.  I toyed with the idea of running 10 miles or maybe even the 12 miles I didn't do last week.  I felt good, better than I have all week and had high hopes.

And then I tried to get out of my car.  And I mean try.  The wind was so strong it kept trying to shut the door on me (yea, on me.  I have one leg out when the door started to close!).  Got out and realized A. it was going to be a rough run and B. I shouldn't have been so cavalier about not wearing my gloves.

It started out ok.  Cold, but ok.  I did the big hill today, which I haven't really been running lately.  I did that first, then headed into the neighborhood I normally run.  And the neighborhood seriously almost killed me.  The winds were killer!  Several times I had to just concentrate on not being pushed into the road.  And as I ran, there were all sorts of things the winds did to people's houses/yards - knocked over someone's mailbox, pulled off someone else's siding, and some yard decorations were rolling around in the street.

So those high hopes of 10 miles or even 12 miles?  Yea, they got ditched when all the above happened.  I managed 8 miles, which is 2 more than I really thought I would get in with this wind.  Today's run was scheduled to be 8, so I'm happy with it.

And this time next week, I'll have done packet pick-up at Disney's Wild World of Sports and will be hanging in Epcot.  Preparing myself for the half marathon the next morning.  Eep.

One week from today...

I will be on a plane flying to Florida for the Disney Princess Half Marathon.  It seems so crazy to think that in 12 days, I will be running a half marathon...13.1 miles.  Who does these kinds of things?  I never assumed I would.  Never thought I could.  Never thought I had the stamina to do it.  Never thought I had the guts to put myself out there.

And yet, T-12 days.  I'll be getting up at the crack of dawn...actually earlier as every runner has to be in their corral at 5:00 a.m., which means I'll be up at like 3:00 a.m. or some such.  Which is not going to be easy.  I'm not a morning person.  And then at approximately 6:25 a.m., I will head off with the other runners (who are slow like me) and start the Disney Princess Half Marathon.  It's kinda insane.

In preparation for this momentous occasion, I tried finding a royal blue running shirt to wear.  Temps are going to be much warmer there than they have been around here while training, so I need a short sleeve shirt.  I went to 10 stores yesterday seeking one out.  Nothing.  That's not completely true.  There was one royal blue shirt at Dick's Sporting Goods for $32.99.  And then there was nothing.  It just seemed a lot of money for a short sleeved running shirt.  Debating changing my color scheme for the race because of it.  We shall see.  I still have a week before we leave...

One small step for Chris...

...one giant leap for Chriskind.  LOL!  Well, it's not really that dramatic really.  But, today was the first time I have ever run double digit mileage.  So, before heading out today, I grabbed this photo of me in the front yard.  I do have feet (would make running a little difficult if I didn't), but they were swallowed up by the snow.

This is what it looks like around these parts with all the snow we've been receiving lately.  When out on my runs, the sidewalks are much clearer than they've been in weeks.  Which is really nice honestly.  But, the snow is about that high on either side of the sidewalks.  It seems kinda strange to be running through about a foot or more of snow.  There are still a few places where there's slushy snow on the sidewalks, but it's really much much better.

It was a good run.  I was feeling really good overall.  Really kinda dreading being out there for 2.5 hours, but in the end it wasn't too bad.  I distracted myself with weird things (such as why do people not clear their driveways and if I get through this, I can have an iced Blueberry coffee.) to get through it.  At one point, I was using fractions to get through it (a quarter of the way through, a third of the way through).  Honestly, this was probably a bad idea as I'm really bad at fractions.  But in the end, it worked out.  ;-)

I'm really happy with today's run.  Got my 10 miles in with only one tiny little walk break.  I run an area during the last 2 miles that had a really steep hill to it.  I didn't realize this when I chose to run there.  Just couldn't make it all the way up that hill...

Just a 5k to go now!

Oh!  And look, Garmin kept track of my run for me.  :-)

Halfway there...

This morning I checked out my training schedule for the Disney Princess Half Marathon.  Hubby had been talking about how he had a 4 mile run scheduled for today for his training program and I kept thinking I would have more miles to cover today.  Which I thought odd since he's training for a full marathon and I'm only doing half (yes, yes, I know.  A half is still impressive.)

I noticed two things when I checked my mileage for today's run.  One, we are running the same number of miles today - 4.  Which, I thought strange.  The funny thing is, it will take him about 33-35 minutes to get his 4 miles in, while it will take me 55 minutes to get mine in.  That's somewhat depressing...

I also noticed that I am at the halfway mark in my training program.  I have been training for 6 weeks and I have 6 weeks to go.  Wow.  That is crazy!  I had no idea I had gotten that far in the training.  I had been saying I was about 6 weeks away from the race, but it didn't click that it also means I'm halfway through training.  It's all down hill from here.  Which is kinda insane.

It's insane because I never thought I would have the strength to train for a half marathon.  I never thought I could keep going on a training program that made me run more than a few miles.  Then again, I never thought I could run a mile before and look at me now.  My long run on Saturday was 9 miles.  Yes, nine miles.  Insane.  I was the girl who always said, the only reason I run is if someone is chasing me...and even then they would catch me.

So, it's all downhill on the training for the Disney Princess Half Marathon.  In six weeks, I'll be standing at the starting line with thousands of other women, with my good friend and training partner (somewhere way in front of me - she's much faster), freaking out about what I've gotten myself into, hoping I don't freeze before the race starts, and hoping for two things:

1. I finish the Disney Princess Half Marathon and
2. I can find Stitch on the course and have my picture taken with him.

7 Miles

Not as cool "8 Mile," but still a good amount of running going on.  This was supposed to be run yesterday, but we had a weird snow "storm" happen and I was a little nervous about running ON snow.  I've never run on snow and was a tad nervous, so I didn't go out.

Went out this morning for 7 miles.  It was 27 degrees, with wind chills in the teens and boy could you feel it!  I had all sorts of cold weather gear on and was still cold.  Ugh.

And it was a brutal run.  For whatever reason, I just wasn't in it.  I kept thinking about how I wanted to stop.  And this was at mile 1.5.  Not good.  But I kept going.  I kept running.  I kept ignoring my mental attitude of stop.  It's cold.  Your legs hurt.  Running around the same neighborhood is boring.  I kept at it and finished with 7 miles, exactly what I set out to do.

But, I got my 7 miles in.  I did it.  And now I have to start night running.  I begin the new job tomorrow with a 4 week training program, which means I won't be home until after the sun has set.  I have some new light colored jackets, a reflector vest, and a head lamp.  It should be interesting.  Tomorrow night is the first time I get all decked out in the night running gear and give it whirl.  Here's hoping I don't get run over!  :-)

8 Mile

Doesn't it remind you of the Eminem movie?  It does me.  Every time I see it, I think of Eminem.

In reality, 8 miles has nothing to do with Eminem or the movie.  It has all to do with the run I had this afternoon.  I went out in a fairly nice day and ran 8 miles.  Which seems crazy to me.  I ran 6 miles last Sunday, which was the first time since October 16th (and the Baltimore Marathon Relay).  Then the lovely pulled hamstring happened and I had to start over again.  And I have finally gotten myself up to the longer distances...even if they are slow.

But today was a milestone, I hit EIGHT miles.  I had never done that before.  On the 16th of October (Baltimore Marathon Relay), I ran 7 miles.  It was crazy honestly.  I hadn't run all week and I was kinda nervous it wouldn't happen.  But, I went out anyway and chose to try.  You never know until you try, right?

It was a good run overall.  I had no worries for about the first 5 miles.  And even then, I knew the 8 would probably happen (I was about 98% sure).  The issue I had at 5 miles was how to finish the last three miles?  There's this one big hill that I just really didn't want to run up, so I tried to figure out how to avoid it.  Sadly, in my complete lack of foresight, I ran multiple OTHER hills to avoid the ONE hill I initially didn't want to run.  I did end up walking one block because the that hill was just killing me.  I really did not feel up to running that one.  I walked one block and then ran the last mile.

So, I ran 8 miles today in 1 hour 57 minutes and 56 miliseconds.  Which gave me a 14:44 mile.  Not what I'm hoping for come Feb. 27th, but I did do all 8 miles under 2 miles, which was today's goal.  I feel good about the race and feel it's possible now.

And on my way home, I rewarded myself with an iced blueberry coffee.  Yum!

Operation 20 Still Plugging Away

It has not been as easy as I thought it would be to stick to healthy eating over the last 6 weeks.  I really though I had it licked.  I was motivated.  I wanted to kick some fat to the curb.  I wanted to reach a certain weight by the end of the year.  And then...I don't know.  It didn't happen.  I've been playing with the same few pounds for the last few weeks.  It's frustrating.

Operation 20 Goal (February 25th): 20 pounds
Operation 20 Half-Goal (December 31st): 10 pounds
Today's Result: -1 pounds.

Operation 20 To-Go: 17 pounds
Operation 20 Half-Goal to Go: 7 pounds

So, not where I wanted to be at this stage in the game.  There are three weeks left in the year, which means I can still lose a bit more before the New Year.  I won't hit my 10 pound goal by the end of the year, but I'm not going to give up.  I'm going to keep on plugging away and if I lose 5 pounds by the end of the year, well, that's 5 pounds I can cross off my list.

I will say, I have really gotten into the Disney Princess Half Marathon training now.  I have a running plan all laid out for me that will help me reach that 13.1 miles come February 27th.  The plan and I differ about where I should be right now, but no worries, some how we meet up at the end of the month and I will be on-track mileage wise with it going into 2011.

With that being said, hubby and I hit the Jingle Bell 5k this morning.  I was scheduled for 3 to 3.5 miles today, it was perfect timing.  We like it because for some unknown reason we always finish with really good times.  I ran my PR for a 5k at this race last year and missed it this year by thiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiis much.  Ugh.  Ah well.  It's the first time I've run 3.1 miles since October 17th, so I'm not complaining too much...and it was the second best time I've ever had.  ;-)  So, a good cold run.  The next race on the horizon is Disney...eep!

Running in the cold

Out again today for a run.  I need to continue this running thing because the Disney Princess Half Marathon really seems like it's reality.  Hotel was booked yesterday.  So, now we have registration paid and a place to sleep.

So, off I went this morning in 30 degree temps to run my 2.5 miles.  I know it sounds pathetically short compared to the 13.1 miles I need by 2.27.11, but I am working on it!  I had on my cold weather shirt, a jacket, running hat and gloves.  It's a tad chilly out there these days!

And on all fronts, it was a successful run!  I stayed warm (maybe a tad too warm at times) and I ran the whole 2.5 miles without any pain.  It was lovely.  Especially after Saturday's shortened run due to knee pain.  I was so excited.  I'm chalking up the better run today to A. more movement yesterday (shopping, so walking a bunch and doing a Wii Active cardio workout) and B. lots of stretching this morning.  I was a tad nervous when I hit mile 2 when I realized I hadn't taken my ibuprofen and forgot my knee brace, but it all worked out.  Phew!

And now, I'm all signed up to run the Jingle Bell 5k this Sat.  It worked out perfectly since this Sat. was my 3 to 3.5 mile bump up.  I usually try to aim for the higher end of the two goals, but I'm ok with it being only 3.1 miles since it's a race.  But, wow, perfect timing!  Won't be setting any records or anything, but it'll be good to get out and run.  And I love the little jingle bells they give you for your shoes!  :-)  Ahhh...the little things in life...

And the other shoe dropped

Gah!  I suppose I should be grateful.  I didn't weigh in last week because I was afraid of the number.  I had a feeling it would be a HUGE gain and had no desire to see that.  So, I skipped.  I had high hopes that I might have lost whatever I gained last week this week.  Apparently not.  I am really no closer to loosing that 10 pounds today than I was when I started this project.  Frustrating.

Operation 20 Goal (February 25th): 20 pounds
Operation 20 Half-Goal (December 31st): 10 pounds
Today's Result: +1.2 pounds.

Operation 20 To-Go: 19.6 pounds
Operation 20 Half-Goal to Go: .4 pounds

This is awful.  Seriously awful.  What the heck is going on?  Why can't I get my butt in gear?  I have such high hopes and ideas and then THIS.  This flat out screwing up.  It's upsetting.  I feel like I should be able to do this.  That I can do this.  And yet...

So, I need to wrap my mind around WHY I'm not doing what I'm supposed to.  Why I'm not eating healthier.  Why I'm not exercising more.  Why I'm not making better choices.  I need to figure that out.  Because really, without knowing the WHY, how can I expect change?  How can I expect to hit those goals?  And if I DO hit those goals, how am I to maintain it?

I follow a fabulous blog called Leading the Weigh, where Heather, the blog founder, listed her exercise goals for the month of December.  I was really impressed by her ambitions for the month, since we all know this month is SO crazy that exercise and healthy eating can get thrown out the window among all the office parties, family parties, tree lightings, etc.  So, I'm going to follow her lead and put together a list of exercise goals for the month.  I may not always hit my targets, but it's better to have something to strive for than to just say I did something, that should count, right?

Dec. 4-10
* Run 3 days this week for a total of 7.5 miles (2.5 miles each)
* Do 1 day of 3 mile walking DVD
* Do 2 days of Wii workout
* 1 day of rest

Dec. 11-17
* Run 3 days this week for a total of 10.5 miles (3.5 miles each)
* Participate in the Jingle Bell 5k on 12/11
* Do 1 day of 3 mile walking DVD
* Do 2 days of Wii workout
* 1 day of rest

Dec. 18-24
* Run 3 days this week for a total of 13.5 miles (4.5 miles each)
* Do 2 days of 3 mile walking DVD
* Do 1 day of Wii workout
* 1 day of rest

Dec, 25-31
* Run 3 days this week for a total of 16.5 miles (5.5 miles each)
* Do 2 days of 3 mile walking DVD
* Do 1 day of Wii workout
* 1 day of rest

Ok, that's my plan.  It will get tweaked as the month goes on.  BUT, I think having a plan of attack is better than nothing.  I am expecting a training program for the Disney Princess Half Marathon, so I anticipate things changing with the above plan, but I feel better knowing there's something in place now.  Having it written down and being accountable for it.  Here's hoping next week is a fabulous week!

Two down...

Well, I did it again.  I ran today.  I wanted to run on Tuesday, rather than Monday honestly, but the weather people are claiming 100% chance of rain tomorrow.  Ummm...while I'm not 100% sure they are correct, why take chances?  So, I headed out this morning for a 1.5 mile run.

I took the same route I took on Saturday basically.  There is a nice neighborhood not too far away with sidewalks that I run at, because I'm too chicken to run on streets without them.  I did a little stretching before heading out...trying to get better at that both pre- and post-run.  Headed out and felt a tiny twinge again.  Not too bad, but there.  Had me nervous for a little bit, then it went away.

This run was rough though.  I don't know what it was, but I felt like I was running in molasses.  You know the commercial where the swimmers jump off at a meet and land in caramel?  Yea, that's kinda how I felt.  I felt like I was in slow motion, especially compared to Saturday morning.  I don't know why though.  I really wanted to stop a couple times because I just felt so darn slow, but I was like that's just being a wimp.  1.5 miles isn't that far.  So, I kept at it and finished off at 1.5 miles.

Ironically, it turns out, as much as I felt like I was going at a snail's pace, I ran faster today than Saturday.  Strange...I finished the run at almost a minute faster than last time.  I'm glad I didn't stop since the slowness was all in my mind.

The goal for the rest of the week is to run Thursday for another 1.5 miles (hopefully without feeling like I'm running in caramel or molasses) and then a 2 to 2.5 mile run Saturday morning.  If I can keep adding about a mile every week, I should be able to run the entire Disney Princess Half Marathon.  Should...

Shuffle...shuffle...

So, yea...I anticipated this week being awful and it was.  Just downright hard.  And because of that, I did not do a weigh in.  Nope.  I know it would just disappointment me and I don't want that.

I did get the chance to finally run again.  Went out this morning for the first time in about a month.  Needed to test the knee.  We're about three months out from the Disney Princess Half Marathon and darn it, I have a long road to go.  But, I got out and ran 1.5 miles.  A tad of a twinge after about 7 steps, then it went away.  No pain the rest of the run, which is a HUGE improvement over my last run when my knee hurt the entire time.  Phew!  I did realize that I under dressed.  Had no idea it was SNOWING when I headed out.  A little disconcerting when running to see snowflakes.  Ah well.  Hard core.  It was a good run and a good start to the Half Marathon Training.

I posted a lovely Thanksgiving photo post this week.  If you have a chance, check it out.

My running guru is emailing me a training program and a nutrition plan.  Need both.

Operation 20: Week 2

Well, Week 2 has come and gone.  It was an awful week.  Seriously.  I ate more crap than I should have. I don't know what happened.  Had a hard time getting back to it this week after the weekend.  For some reason, I'm pretty good at come Sunday kicking it back into gear and turning off the eat whatever mode I get into Friday and Saturday.  Not this week.  It was frustrating.  And annoying.

The good thing was I exercised for the first time in weeks.  I did a 30 minute step routine on the Wii and a 60 minute bike ride.  That's something.  It's a start.  And I was happy that neither of those two things made my knee hurt.  I was afraid I would get finished and there would be knee pain.  Hoping this is a good sign.  I want to go for a short run next Saturday for the first time in three weeks.  Aiming for a mile/mile and a half. I don't want to put too much pressure on it.

Ok, so the nitty gritty...

Operation 20 Goal (February 25th): 20 pounds
Operation 20 Half-Goal (December 31st): 10 pounds
Today's Result: 0 pounds.

Operation 20 To-Go: 18.4 pounds
Operation 20 Half-Goal to Go: 8.4 pounds

Yes, I stayed the same this week.  I am grateful that I didn't gain.  I should have, but for some reason I didn't.  I'm not sure exactly what happened, but I'll take it.  So, this week...ugh.  It's going to be a tough one.  Going out to eat tonight at a restaurant that has delicious, but totally unhealthy food.  Heading to Philly for the Marathon (hubby is running the half).  Monday, meeting a friend for Happy Hour.  And the piece de resistance?  Thanksgiving THE DAY BEFORE WEIGH-IN.  Ugh.  Some major will power will be needed this week to get through it all.  One week I will have a simple nothing happening kinda week.

Operation 20: Week 1

When I signed up to run the Disney Princess Half Marathon that I needed to jump start my weight loss.  While I can't imagine loosing weight will magically make me a faster runner, it should take some stress off the joints while I run.  If I get a little faster because of it, that's a nice added bonus.

So, today was the first weigh-in for Operation 20 - 20 pounds lost by Friday, February 25th, the day I leave for the half marathon.  Got up this morning and weighed in.  Results?

Operation 20 Goal (February 25th): 20 pounds
Operation 20 Half-Goal (December 31st): 10 pounds
Today's Result: -1.6 pounds.

Operation 20 To-Go: 18.4 pounds
Operation 20 Half-Goal to Go: 8.4 pounds

So, not too bad.  I would have liked 2 pounds this week, but a loss is a loss, right?  It's better than gaining.  I have high hopes for next week as I am going to work on getting in some exercise.  While I'm not allowed to run just yet (doctor's orders!), I can walk and use my Wii.  So, I am going to add those into the mix and hope to see a little bigger number next week.

So, 8.4 to go until December 31st and 18.4 to go until February 25th.  Still doable.

Injury Update

So, after about three and a half weeks of not knowing what was going on with my knee, I decided to go to the doctor.  I was lucky in that I called this morning and they got me in this afternoon.  I was a tad surprised.

I described to the doctor my symptoms, she checked out my knee, and it sounds better than I was anticipating.  No swelling, no bruising, and no cyst.  She does think I pulled something (a ligament or the hamstring, I don't remember which).  So, course of action:

1. No running - I can walk and do the Wii, no running.
2. Stretching
3. Ibuprofin twice a day

All this for two weeks.  At that time, reassess.  Then determine if I can get moving again.  If not, go to an orthopedic and probably get PT.  But, I think I'm in good shape.  My thoughts are, as long as I can get moving again by December, the half marathon training will be fine.  So fingers crossed!
